Close Up Radio Spotlights Tara Chandler of ACAPS

    in Psychology

Asheville, NC – Tara Chandler is an experienced counselor focused on Somatic and EMDR treatment interventions that help individuals deal with emotional, psychological, and physical trauma and co-owner of Appalachian Counseling and Psychological Services.
For over ten years, Tara has been helping clients heal from their past wounds and pain through a specific type of somatic therapy, EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This therapy uses bilateral stimulation by moving the eyes in a directed way, to blur the emotions connected to any horrible experiences we have gone through. It can also help with anxiety disorders, depression, and even panic attacks.
Aside from EMDR, another therapy tool she uses somatic therapy, examines the body’s relationship to the mind and actually helps us get connected to our bodies. Because when we undergo trauma, our bodies hold on to memories of that trauma and we need to release them in order to fully recover. Through techniques like breathing exercises, dancing, and meditation we begin to genuinely feel better, lighter, with a better sense of purpose and renewed confidence.
Tara’s work is also tremendously focused on working with women going through any life transition, from divorce or relationship breakup, dealing with the loss of a loved one, becoming empty nesters, career changes, menopause, motivating us to achieve greatness and not get stuck in our limiting beliefs.
“If you are struggling with trauma and other challenges and issues you don’t have to suffer in silence and pain. There is no shame in reaching out for help and the benefits will be incredible. You can move from inner conflict to harmony and I am here to help you get there.”

Part 6: Close Up Radio Welcomes Back Dr. Vatsala Sastry

    in Medicine

Brooksville, FL - Dr. Sastry was inspired to become an infectious diseases doctor so she could help people live longer lives free of pain and diseases. She emphasizes how a simple vaccine or drug could mean a lifetime of freedom from illnesses. Infections can be absolutely cured with a proper diagnosis and her life- long mission is being able to help patients live healthy and successful lives.
Today, she says we are much more equipped to fight COVID-19 should there be a surge because of the number of people who have gotten vaccinated and boosted. In fact, unvaccinated people still face the most risk from COVID-19. She stresses how we should stay up to date on our vaccines and precautions they should take based on their health history and risk tolerance.  Vaccine boosters targeted to combat the omicron subvariants and new vaccines are arriving soon and be widely available.
Other infectious diseases are looming. For instance, a global outbreak of mosquito diseases such as malaria and west Nile virus are of huge concern The common diseases that are spread through a mosquito bite are Malaria, West Nile, and Zike. With global temperatures rising, ecosystems shifting and mosquitos are spreading into new places formerly unwelcoming to their species, spreading malaria, West Nile virus, and dengue.
According to studies, over half of all known infectious diseases have been even made worse by climate change a dire consequence of human activities like deforestation. It’s critical we cut greenhouse gas emissions not only to decrease the spread and gravity of infectious diseases but for the health and longevity of our planet. Research supports by staggering numbers that climate hazards like heat waves, droughts, and ocean warming, are all linked to infectious diseases. We are being crippled by the incumbrance of these deadly diseases and every one of us is at risk.

The Rock & Roll Shrink Ep. 135 Mother's Little Helper: Antidepressants

    in Psychology

Mother's Little Helper (Depression & Antidepressants)
Earlier this month, I ran across an article in my news feed on antidepressants that caught my attention, and that I thought might be a good topic for discussion.
After further investigation, I found that honestly neither the new source nor the original was necessarily all that qualified to make broad, sweeping statements about the efficacy of anti-depressants or related medications.
Regardless, I thought it might be worthwhile to look more closely at these claims, and then for Dr. Mathis to opine on the correctness and credibility of either or both posts, with regard to the use of antidepressants.
    Tonight, we will discuss:
The Original Referenced Article from 2008 The August 2022 Article Therapy, Counterpoints and Critiques Conclusions, Closing Remarks, & Final Suggestions We'll start off the evening with some topic-relevant Classic Rock played by Dr. Mathis, followed by Classic Rock trivia in "The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls," followed by our topic discussion.
Please follow our bi-weekly, Wednesday evening shows, at 11 pm ET. We will have a new topic for you in two weeks!
